Frank Wrathall becomes the first NGTC driver on a BTCC podium
On a warm and sunny day, the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship held its first race on the new '300' track at Snetterton in Norfolk.
From pole, Jason Plato led from the start and proceeded to win the first race of the day for Silverline Chevrolet. Matt Neal had started to challenge Plato on the first lap however in attempting to pass him into the hairpin spun off which left Neal stranded, re-joining at the back of the field and out of the points.
Alex MacDowall finished 2nd to give the Silverline Chevrolet team a well-deserved 1-2 finish with Gordon Shedden completing the top three for Honda Racing.
The undoubted star however was Frank Wrathall in the Dynojet Toyota Avensis. Following on from setting the record as the first NGTC car to qualify in the top ten, Frank got a solid start and due to Neal's exit was soon in 6th.
After some tremendous racing, notably with Tom Chilton in the Team Aon Ford Focus, the 24 year old from Garstang in Lancashire brought the Avensis home in 4th. Not content with his qualifying heroics, this also gave him the class win as the top independent driver and in doing so made the Avensis the very first NGTC car on the BTCC podium and put the new class very firmly on the map.
