Tom Chilton and Mat Jackson head the time sheets in free practice at Silverstone as Jason Plato finds the going tough ahead of the qualifying session this afternoon.
Mat Jackson was fastest overall in free practice
On a bright and sunny morning at Silverstone in Northampton, the British Touring Car Championship prepared for the all-important qualifying session this afternoon as the first of the two free practice sessions got under way.
Whilst Tom Chilton recorded the fastest time in the first practice session in his Team Aon Ford Focus, all eyes were on the five title contenders. Of these, Mat Jackson was the fastest and 2nd overall in his Airwaves Racing Ford Focus. His closest challengers were the Honda Racing Team Civics of Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden in 4th and 6th respectively. James Nash in the 888 with Collins Contractors Vauxhall Vectra was 5th fastest with Jason Plato 7th in the Silverline Chevrolet Cruze. Tom Onslow-Cole was 3rd fastest to complete a Ford Focus 1-2-3.
In the second free practice session, Mat Jackson improved on his first session time to top the time sheets with the fastest lap of the day so far of 59.627 seconds ahead of Dave Newsham in the Special Tuning Racing SEAT Leon who surprisingly outperformed the Honda Racing Civics of Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal who were 3rd and 4th respectively. Jason Plato could not improve on his first session time and ended the second session in a disappointing 13th place having completed fewer laps than anybody else in the session.
With the other championship contenders outperforming Jason Plato in both practice sessions, the Silverline Chevrolet driver will have an uphill battle to qualify well for the first race tomorrow. All of the championship hopefuls will be keen to qualify on pole and earn the additional championship point which could prove crucial in the final standings for 2011.
