Audi celebrate a 1-2-3 clean sweep
After two days of glorious uninterrupted sunshine and temperatures in the 70's, the great British weather certainly had a trick up its sleeve. With all the teams having dry set-ups in the cars and no laps in the wet, the heavens opened just before the start of the race to throw all the practice and qualifying data out of the window.
The race started in torrential rain and poor visibility and a spin by number 4 Timo Scheider at Graham Hill bend on the first lap opened up the field with Martin Tomczyk in the Schaeffler Audi A4 opening a commanding lead. Behind him, Brits Gary Paffett and Jamie Green in the Mercedes' were struggling with the set up and started to slip down the field.
After the mandatory pit stops, Gary Paffett was able to start clawing his way back up the field and by lap 60 was back in 4th and really on the pace. Of the other home drivers, Oliver Jarvis was running in 8th, with David Coulthard 10th, Jamie Green 12th and Susie Stoddart 15th.
In the closing stages, Gary Paffett was flying but in the end the time limit on the race expired in the 88th lap and he had to settle for 4th and being the highest placed British driver and the highest placed Mercedes in the process.
It was an emphatic and dominant 1-2-3 for Audi with Martin Tomczyk winning from Mattias Ekstrom in 2nd and Edoardo Mortara 3rd. After a sensational day's action which thrilled the crowd, the DTM series heads to Oschersleben in Germany on the 18th September.
