Donington Park - Race 1 report - 17/7/11
By MJP Media | 17 July 2011
Chevrolet dominates the first race of the day at Donington Park as Yvan Muller takes victory ahead of team-mates Rob Huff and Alain Menu.
Chevrolet led the way in a dominant 1-2-3 victory
The rain which had been forecast held off for most of the first World Touring Car Championship race of the day at Donington Park with only a light drizzle in the closing laps.
Following their impressive performance in the practice and qualifying sessions, it was no surprise that the Chevrolet drivers dominated the first race.
From pole position, Yvan Muller led to the chequered flag closely followed by team-mates Rob Huff and Alain Menu who started and finished 2nd and 3rd respectively to record an impressive 1-2-3 result for the Chevrolet team.
From 8th on the grid, Tom Coronel was the 'best of the rest' finishing a well-deserved 4th in his BMW 320. Gabriele Tarquini also did well in his Sunred SR Leon, finishing 5th from 11th on the grid. Franz Engstler was the highest places Yokohama Trophy driver, finishing 6th overall.
With the reverse grid system, the top ten drivers from the first qualifying session would be reversed for the grid for the second race of the day. This would see Yvan Muller start in 10th place with Rob Huff 9th and Alain Menu 8th. Coupled with the prospect of more rain, the second race should prove to be a thrilling event.
