BWM dominate the top of the time sheets in both free practice sessions for the 3rd round of the DTM at Brands Hatch.
Martin Tomczyk - fastest in the first practice session
Martin Tomczyk in the BMW Team RMG M3 was the fastest driver in the first practice session at the stunning Kent circuit. On his fastest lap, the reigning DTM champion covered the tight Indy circuit in a sensational 42.415 seconds. The times were very tight at the top, with the Mercedes team HWA AMG C-Coupé of Britain's Gary Paffett only 0.077 seconds slower.
Augusto Farfus had his BMW on the limit in the second practice session
Behind him came fellow Mercedes-Benz drivers Christian Vietoris, Robert Wickens and Roberto Merhi, all within one hundredths of a second. Next were the 2 BMW's of Bruno Spengler and Augusto Farfus in sixth and seventh place. Mattias Ekström ended up eighth as the top Audi for team ABT Sportsline in the A5 DTM. Ralf Schumacher and Jamie Green (both Mercedes-Benz) rounded out the top ten. Audi driver Miguel Molina completed the highest number of laps as the Spaniard drove a total of 81 laps.
In the second practice session, Brazilian Augusto Farfus completed the highest number of laps as the BMW driver set the fastest lap time of the morning session with 41.312 seconds. In a major improvement in fortunes, Mattias Ekström was second fastest with his Audi as the Swede was just 0.035 seconds down on Farfus. Championship leader Gary Paffett ended up as the best-placed Mercedes-Benz driver. At his home circuit, he was classified fourth behind BMW driver Martin Tomczyk.
Mattias Ekström was on the pace in free practice
The action starts in earnest for the 22 drivers this afternoon in the qualifying session as the battle is on for the starting grid positions for the third DTM round of the season and we will bring you details of that after the session.
