Britain's Rob Huff became the 2012 World Touring Car Champion after a dramatic final day climax to the season in Macau.
2012 WTCC champion Rob Huff with wife Jazz
Huff first came to the British public's attention when he drove a works SEAT in the ever-popular British Touring Car Championship, his first season as a professional racing driver.
The works Chevrolet driver from Cambridge avenged his disappointment of last year when he narrowly missed out in claiming his maiden World Touring Car Championship title by a mere 3 points. This year, Huff went into the final round at Macau with a healthy lead in the standings and his five points for claiming pole position left him 37 points ahead of team-mate and nearest challenger Alain Menu and 44 ahead of Yvan Muller, the third Chevrolet driver.
Huff really does have something to shout about!
The Briton's nerves were sorely tested in the first of the two races when Huff hit a wall on the street circuit and crashed out, with team-mate and defending world champion Yvan Muller taking the 25 points for victory and Menu claiming second. This meant Huff needed to finish in the top six in the last race of the season to take the title and he brilliantly held his nerve to finish second behind Menu, with Muller third. Huff's celebrations were well deserved as Chevrolet announced earlier in the season that they would not be competing in 2013.
Huff's final points tally of 413 left him 12 ahead of Menu, with Muller a further 8 points behind. This is the second year running that Chevrolet have claimed a 1-2-3 in the World Touring Car Championship drivers standings and the third year in a row that they have claimed the manufacturers title.
2012 was another fantastic year for the Chevrolet team
Huff said: "I'm absolutely shocked and speechless. I think it will take quite a while to sink in, if it ever does. It has been an emotional weekend." Indeed, it has been a monumental year for Huff. Having married his longstanding fiancée Jazz earlier in the summer, the WTCC title really caps off the year. When asked which was the highlight of the year, he just smiled and true to form was his usual diplomatic self. Having known Rob for over a decade, all we can say is well done mate, you deserved it.
