2013 Silverstone Classic promises legendary touring car action
By MJP Media | 8 May 2013
This year's Silverstone Classic meeting takes place on the weekend of the 26th, 27th and 28th July 2013 and features a mix of historic racing cars, racing action, aerial displays and concerts.
Lotus Cortina
A now familiar fixture on the racing calendar, the Silverstone Classic provides a fabulous 3 day family friendly mix of historic cars in action and racing, static car displays, action packed displays and rock concerts each day. Throw in a big wheel like the London Eye and a big funfair for the youngsters and it is a weekend not to be missed.
Today, Wednesday, saw the official media launch day and we were privileged to be invited to Silverstone to see just what was going to be on view in July. The big touring car news is that 4 of the greatest names in British touring car history will be in action over the Classic meeting: John Cleland, Tim Harvey, Tiff Needell and Patrick Watts. Adding to this will be the actual touring car racing. The two-driver Under 2 Litre Touring Car race is always a huge crowd pleaser and this year celebrates the 50th anniversary of the mighty Lotus Cortina and there is an expected 20+ of these in a full grid of 58 cars.
Super Tourers from Peugeot and Vauxhall
Turning the clock forward, we will see the fantastic Super Touring Trophy which puts the emphasis on both the Group A cars like the Cosworth Sierras and BMW M3s as well as the famous Super Tourers such as the Alpha Romeos, Volvos and Peugeots of the British Touring Car Championship of the mid 1990s. Many people regard the Super Tourers as the best touring cars ever and we were lucky enough today to get 3 laps of Silverstone circuit in the famous Ford Cosworth RS500 of Tim Harvey and we can vouch for just how quick these cars are.
We were also able to get a close-up look at one of the unique cars of motoring history - Jim Clark's Lotus 25 - and watched it being put through its paces by the one and only David Coulthard. This is the car that put Jim Clark on the map as World Champion in 1963.
Tim Harvey's Sierra RS500 Cosworth
In addition to the touring cars will be a unique display. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 there will be a parade of 911 Porsche 911s. Also featuring is a 100th birthday celebration for James Bond's favourite car manufacturer: Aston Martin. Throw in a selection of the best racing action, aerial displays and the great concerts including the Hollies and you have a really enjoyable weekend for all.
