Brands Hatch (Indy) - Race 2 Report - 31/3/13
By MJP Media | 31 March 2013
Jason Plato doubles up in race 2 at Brands Hatch to maintain his domination of the opening rounds of the British Touring Car Championship.
Jason Plato takes another victory at Brands Hatch
Following his victory in race one, Jason Plato started from pole position in the MG KX Momentum Racing MG6 for the second race of the day at Brands Hatch. As in the first race he was in a class of his own and sped off into the distance despite having his race one success ballast on board and still being on the standard compound tyre.
Unchallenged, Plato extended his lead to almost 4 seconds over second placed Andrew Jordan in the Pirtek Racing Honda Civic before a safety car situation brought allowed the pack to catch him up.
Andrew Jordon enjoys a second podium finish
Behind Plato, the WIX Racing Audi A4 of Rob Austin offered some challenge to the mighty MG6 until he spun out of contention on lap 7, handing second place to Andrew Jordan. Keeping Jordan in his sights was Gordon Shedden in the Honda Yuasa Racing Civic. The top three drivers maintained their positions, earning Plato his second victory of the day and Jordan another second place finish.
For defending champion Shedden, his 3rd place finish seemed to be a significant improvement on his 19th position in race 1, however he was subsequently excluded from the race result due to technical infringements. Meanwhile team-mate Matt Neal improved from 21st in race 1 to 4th in race 2. Jeff Smith continued his solid start to the championship with 3rd place to go with his 5th place in race 1 for Pirtek Racing. Jason Plato's team-mate Sam Tordoff in the second MG6 also impressed with a 5th place finish after his 4th place in race 1 which helped to cement MG's lead in the constructors championship.
Gordon Shedden was excluded from the race result
The action was fast and furious further down the field with a number of incidents and crashes involving Frank Wrathall, Dave Newsham, Ollie Jackson, David Nye and Rob Collard. In the end, 10 cars failed to finish the race which will mean some quick drivers will start race 3 at the back of the grid which will only add to the excitement. In the reverse grid draw it was the number 7 that was pulled out by DJ Chris Evans giving Mat Jackson the pole position for Airwaves Racing in his Ford Focus.
As we look ahead to race 3, Jason Plato leads the championship on 43 points ahead of Andrew Jordan on 35 with Jeff Smith third.
