Sam Tordoff celebrates his maiden BTCC victory
Following their total domination of the free practice and qualifying sessions yesterday, MG KX Momentum Racing had both of their MG6s on the front row of the grid for the first race of the day at Snetterton with Sam Tordoff in pole position ahead of team-mate Jason Plato. Defending BTCC champion Gordon Shedden started on row 2 alongside Andrew Jordan with Colin Turkington and Aron Smith on row 3. Current championship leader Matt Neal started 11th on the grid.
Off the line the MGs got a good start as did the following cars. Colin Turkington in the eBay Motors BMW 125i M Sport immediately started to gain on the Pirtek Racing Honda Civic of Andrew Jordan, taking 4th place by the end of the first lap. Gordon Shedden in 3rd place was also running well in the Honda Yuasa Racing Civic and at that time was the fastest car on the circuit.
Tordoff leading Plato, Shedden and the rest of the field
By lap 3, Matt Neal had made his way up to 9th place but found himself in the middle of the pack, making it difficult to make up more places. Out in front, Sam Tordoff was now the fastest driver on the track as the battle behind continued between Jason Plato, Gordon Shedden and Colin Turkington.
The leaders were holding their positions whilst on lap 5 Matt Neal was challenging Jack Goff in the RCIB Insurance Racing Vauxhall Insignia for 8th place, finally managing to get past on lap 6. Meanwhile, Gordon Shedden was pushing Jason Plato hard for 2nd place whilst himself coming under increasing pressure from Colin Turkington.
Gordon Shedden completed the final podium position
Matt Neal was still running in 8th place on lap 10 but being challenged by Mat Jackson in the Airwaves Racing Ford Focus. After an intense battle Jackson passed Neal, dropping the former BTCC champion back down to 9th place. Sam Tordoff was still in a commanding position leading the race whilst the fight for the remaining podium places was intensifying between Jason Plato, Gordon Shedden and Colin Turkington.
The race ended with Sam Tordoff taking his maiden Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race win with team-mate Jason Plato 2. Gordon Shedden held on to 3rd place to complete the podium positions with Colin Turkington 4th, Andrew Jordan 5th and Aron Smith 6th. Lea Wood won the Jack Sears Cup for S2000 specification cars and Nick Foster had to smash the window of his eBay Motors BMW 125i M Sport in order to remove a troublesome wasp from his car!
