Jason Plato takes pole position in qualifying at Donington Park
Having finished 6th and 4th in the free practice sessions earlier in the day, Jason Plato went on to put his MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save MG6 at the top of the time sheet in the qualifying session from Donington Park, securing pole position for the first race tomorrow and earning the first championship point of the weekend. Team-mate Sam Tordoff, who topped the time sheet in the second practice session, also did well by qualifying 3rd.
Splitting the MGs and joining Jason Plato on the front row of the grid, Honda Yuasa Racing's Gordon Shedden qualified 2nd in his Honda Civic Tourer. Shedden has consistently out-performed team-mate Matt Neal, posting faster times in all three sessions today. Neal ended the qualifying session in 9th place.
Gordon Shedden is the fastest of the Honda Civics
Qualifying 4th and joining Gordon Shedden on the 2nd row of the grid for race 1 is eBay Motors driver and former BTCC champion Colin Turkington in his BMW 125i M Sport. Turkington faired considerable better than his team-mates Rob Collard and Nick Foster who qualified 13th and 15 respectively.
Row three of the grid will be taken the Volkswagen CCs of Chrome Edition Restart Racing team-mates Aron Smith and Alain Menu who qualified 5th and 6th. Smith topped the time sheet in the first free practice session and was 2nd fastest in the second with Menu 3rd. The Volkswagen CCs will certainly be worth watching during the three races tomorrow.
Sam Tordoff qualified well in 3rd place
Reigning BTCC champion Andrew Jordan qualified his Pirtek Racing Honda Civic in 7th place with the RCIB Insurance Racing Vauxhall Insignia of Jack Goff in 8th. With Matt Neal 9th for Honda Yuasa Racing, Marc Hynes completed the top ten places in his Quantel Bifold Racing MG6. Former BTCC champion Fabrizio Giovanardi just missed out on a top ten position, qualifying his Airwaves Racing Ford Focus ST in 11th place.
With 16 cars qualifying within a second of pole-sitter Jason Plato's lap time, the scene is set for a thrilling day of racing tomorrow. Will Andrew Jordan retain his lead in the championship? Will MG or Volkswagen record their first victory of the 2014 BTCC season? These questions and many more will be answered tomorrow!
