Donington Park - Race 2 Report - 20/4/14
By MJP Media | 20 April 2014
MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save do the double again in the second race from Donington Park as Sam Tordoff and Jason Plato get another 1-2 victory.
Sam Tordoff is delighted with his 2nd BTCC career victory
Following their dominance of the first race, MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save team-mates Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff lined up on the front row of the grid for the second race of the day. Behind them on the grid were reigning BTCC champion Andrew Jordan, Rob Collard, Colin Turkington and Gordon Shedden.
The drama started on lap one when Alain Menu in the Chrome Edition Restart Racing Volkswagen CC had a major crash at the Old Hairpin, ending his race and causing the safety car to be deployed. Before the safety car period prevented further overtaking, both Rob Collard and Colin Turkington in the eBay Motors BWM 125i M Sports passed the Pirtek Racing Honda Civic of Andrew Jordan, pushing him down to 5th place.
Sam Tordoff leading Jason Plato to another 1-2 result for MG
Racing resumed on lap four with the two MGs again extending a lead over the rest of the field. The man on the move was Honda Yuasa Racing's Gordon Shedden who, having slipped to 7th on the first lap, was able to climb to 5th on lap five before a further safety car period which was extended when Ollie Jackson in the STP Racing with Sopp and Sopp suffered clutch and brake failure, leaving his Proton Gen-2 stranded on the racing line.
When the safety car pulled in, the MGs yet again established their lead with Andrew Jordan and Gordon Shedden in hot pursuit. Shedden passed Jordan on lap 15 to take 3rd place with Matt Neal running in 5th, Colin Turkington 6th and Aron Smith 7th. Further down the field, the BTCC's youngest driver, Aiden Moffat in the Laser Tools Racing Chevrolet Cruze had moved up from 22nd on the grid to be running in 16th place.
Aiden Moffat secured his best BTCC finish
The race ended with a second 1-2 victory of the day for the MG duo with Sam Tordoff taking his 2nd BTCC career victory ahead of former champion Jason Plato. Gordon Shedden finished 3rd ahead of Andrew Jordan with Matt Neal 5th and Colin Turkington 6th. Following his excellent results so far today, Jason Plato now leads the standings in the Drivers' Championship by one point from Andrew Jordan with Colin Turkington and Gordon Shedden tied in 3rd place.
The final race of the day will see the top 6 finishers of race two reversed on the grid with Colin Turkington being gifted pole position alongside Matt Neal. Row two will be taken by Andrew Jordan and Gordon Shedden with Jason Plato and Sam Tordoff on row three.
