Silverstone - Race 2 Report - 28/9/14
By MJP Media | 28 September 2014
Jason Plato makes it two wins from two races by taking victory in the second race of the day at Silverstone. Colin Turkington again finishes a solid 2nd.
Jason Plato keeps his championship campaign on target
Race two at Silverstone saw MG KX Clubcard Fuel Save driver Jason Plato again attempting to keep his championship hopes alive with nothing but a win being good enough if eBay Motors' Colin Turkington finished in the points. With Plato and Turkington starting first and second respectively, all was to play for. Also up for grabs was the Independents Trophy between eBay Motors and Airwaves Racing in a season that has given us 10 different race winners, the most for a decade.
From the off, Colin Turkington made a great start to pass Jason Plato for the lead, with Mat Jackson attacking Plato as well. Turkington was able to keep his lead though to ensure the extra point earned for leading the race at the end of lap 1. Plato however was able to re-take the lead at Brooklands on lap 2, with Jackson still in third, Alain Menu in 4th and Rob Collard in 5th.
Colin Turkington challenging Jason Plato for the lead
The top 5 drivers were unable to find any space and were circulating in a train of 7 cars as Aron Smith and Sam Tordoff joined the queue. It was so close that on lap 9 Jason Plato was less than 1/100th of a second from Colin Turkington. Lap 11 saw several incidents as Rob Austin hit Gordon Shedden, Martin Depper limped out with a puncture and other damage with Andrew Jordan and Marc Hynes also having contact.
On lap 13, the Independents battle had a big move as Alain Menu took Mat Jackson for third, depriving Jackson of points. This move also let Jason Plato and Colin Turkington open a small lead ahead of the fight behind them. Aron Smith then passed Rob Collard and was then all over the back of Mat Jackson. The pace was so even that on lap 18, the top 6 cars lapped within 1/10th of a second of each other. As they headed to the chequered flag, Turkington clearly settled for a comfortable 2nd. There was a huge shunt on lap 21 with Rob Collard's BMW flying through the air and rolling multiple times after he was the innocent party hit by Jack Clarke, causing a red flag situation and serious concern for the eBay Motors BMW driver at the scene. Collard was immediately taken to the medical centre and we wish him well.
Jason Plato celebrates his 2nd podium of the day with Menu and Turkington
The incident brought the race to an end with victory for Jason Plato ahead of Colin Turkington in 2nd and Alain Menu 3rd. Mat Jackson was 4th with Aron Smith and Sam Tordoff rounding out the top 6. This result gave eBay Motors the Independent Teams title for 2014. In the Drivers' Championship, Turkington now has 402 points, 48 points ahead of Jason Plato, with Gordon Shedden a further 45 points behind.
Going into the final race of the day, Colin Turkington still holds all the aces as, whilst his lead has come down slightly, there are only four races left in the season. The reverse grid draw for the final race of the day has put the cat amongst the pigeons with Fabrizio Giovanardi on pole, followed by Sam Tordoff 2nd and Aron Smith 3rd. Mat Jackson will start fourth with Alain Menu fifth. Colin Turkington will start 6th with Jason Plato 7th. This is going to be one race not to be missed!
