Jack Sears Trophy rule changes for 2015

By MJP Media | 14 April 2015

In a last minute decision made immediately before the first race of the season at Brands Hatch, new rules were introduced to determine how the prestigious Jack Sears Trophy would we awarded in 2015.

Last year, it was decided that the winner of the Jack Sears Trophy would be the driver who made up the most places over the year from their starting positions on the grid and the very proud winner was Dave Newsham, now with Power Maxed Racing - Daily Mirror and Daily Record columnists for this season. Over the winter there had been much talk about who the trophy should be aimed at this year. In view of the large number of new drivers to the series it was decided that the trophy should be for them and will go to the leading rookie of 2015.

In order to determine who the 2015 winner will be, a points system had to be devised, bearing in mind that most of these drivers could end up lower down the finishing order in their first year and so could struggle to score full championship points. Accordingly, the rookies have become a separate racing class within the full British Touring Car Championship and it has been decided to award them points in their own class in line with the existing BTCC Independent Drivers Trophy.

As a result, points for the Jack Sears Trophy are awarded as follows. 1st in the rookie class: 20 points, 2nd: 17 points, 3rd: 15 points, 4th: 13 points, 5th: 11 points, 6th: 10 points, 7th: 9 points, 8th: 8 points, 9th: 7 points, 10th: 6 points, 11th: 5 points, 12th: 4 points, 13th: 3 points, 14th: 2 points and 15th: 1 point. Although there aren't currently 15 rookie drivers, it was felt safer to mirror the Independent Drivers Trophy points system in case further rookies join the series.

After Brands Hatch the Jack Sears Trophy standings were:

  1. Mike Bushell - 54
  2. Josh Cook - 40
  3. Stewart Lines - 40
  4. Kieran Gallagher - 36
  5. Alex Martin - 30
  6. Derek Palmer - 28
  7. Andy Wilmot - 0
  8. Richard Hawken - 0

This is sure to be a hard fought trophy amongst the new drivers and it really gives them a lot to go for in Britain's premier motorsport series which is attended by massive crowds and watched live by millions on ITV. It is Donington Park this weekend and the action will again be fast and furious.
