Rockingham Preview - WIN TICKETS!
By MJP Media | 26 August 2015
Rockingham starts a Northamptonshire double header for the BTCC on September 5th and 6th as the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship makes the first of two visits to the county.
Jason Plato leads the Drivers' Championship by 11 points
Rockingham is unlike any other circuit on the BTCC calendar as it is the only venue that has a banked track. This, in addition to its long straights, fast corners and hairpin bends makes for extremely exciting motor racing. Spectator facilities are excellent and include grandstands which afford views of almost the entire circuit.
With only 3 meetings remaining on the 2015 BTCC calendar, Rockingham is once again likely to be a pivotal event for the championship title protagonists. With the newly re-branded Team BMR RCIB Insurance Volkswagen CCs struggling around the Knockhill circuit last weekend and the Honda Yuasa Racing Civic Type Rs taking 2 of the 3 race wins, the Drivers' Championship is now wide open with only 44 points covering the top 7 drivers with 67 points up for grabs at each of the next 3 meetings.
Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal are 2nd and 3rd in the standings
Jason Plato currently leads the Drivers' Championship on 249 points but has the Honda Yuasa Racing duo of Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal just 11 and 22 points behind respectively on 238 and 227. Defending BTCC champion Colin Turkington is currently 4th in the standings with Andrew Jordan 5th on 219. With 5 former BTCC champions at the top of the table, triple WTCC champion Andy Priaulx currently lies 6th in the standings on 208 points however the Team IHG Rewards Club driver will miss the Rockingham event due to other racing commitments made before he signed up to the BTCC. A replacement driver for his BMW 125i M Sport has yet to be announced.
Outside of the top 6 in the Drivers' Championship there are plenty drivers poised to take advantage should the leaders falter including JCT600 Racing with GardX's Sam Tordoff in 7th on 205 points, WIX Racing's Adam Morgan in 8th on 188 points, MG 888 Racing's Jack Goff in 9th on 173 points and JCT600 Racing with GardX's Rob Collard in 10th on 171 points. With 201 points up for grabs in the remaining 3 meetings, the battle for the championship could hardly be any closer.
Andy Priaulx will miss the BTCC meeting at Rockingham
In addition to rounds 22, 23 and 24 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship there will be action from the Renault UK Clio Cup, Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup, KICK Start Energy Ginetta Junior Championship, MSA Formula Championship and HSCC Super Touring Car Championship - a full weekend of exciting motor sport indeed! For tickets to this fantastic event, visit the Rockingham web site or call the circuit on 01536 500 500. With free admission to accompanied children aged 15 and under, all tickets include access to the vast grandstands as well as the central BTCC paddock and, on Sunday, the specially organised autograph session with the touring car drivers in the pit lane.
