British Touring Car Championship
Donington Park - Preview
By MJP Media | 12 April 2016
After a thrilling start to the 2016 season, the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship now heads to Donington Park on April 16th and 17th for the second meeting of the year.
Tom Ingram set the pace with pole position and victory in race one
Donington Park near East Midlands Airport is the venue for the next meeting of the 2016 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship. This historic circuit is a tough technical challenge for the BTCC drivers and their engineers with its fast, open sweeping bends that rise and fall through the circuit's picturesque setting.
If the opening rounds are anything to go by, we are in for another spectacular year of BTCC action. Tom Ingram was the star of the Saturday sessions, posting the fastest lap time in the first free practice session before going on to qualify his Speedworks Motorsport Toyota Avensis in pole position for the first race on the Sunday which he went on to win in a lights-to-flag drive - his maiden BTCC victory. Halfords Yuasa Racing team-mates Gordon Shedden and Matt Neal also showed their good form, qualifying their Honda Civic Type Rs 2nd and 3rd before taking four podium finishes from the three races to lead the championship as we head to Donington Park.
Ashley Sutton in his MG Racing RCIB Insurance MG6GT
Of the six rookie drivers contesting the 2016 Jack Sears Trophy, MG Racing RCIB Insurance's Ashley Sutton was the one to watch. The reigning Renault UK Clio Cup champion was never out of the top 10 in any of the sessions and took three class wins from the three races in addition to outright 4th and 6th in races one and two with his MG6GT, beating far more experienced drivers along the way.
It was a good season opener for the younger drivers in particular. In addition to Tom Ingram's pole and race one victory there were podium finishes for BKR's Aron Smith, Team JCT600 with GardX's Sam Tordoff and Team IHG Rewards Club's Jack Goff with Adam Morgan taking victory in the final race of the day for WIX Racing. Scoring valuable points in the other two races as well, Morgan is currently 3rd in the championship standings, just 1 point behind reigning champion Gordon Shedden with Aron Smith and Andrew Jordan just 5 points further adrift.
Adam Morgan won the reverse grid race for WIX Racing
