British Touring Car Championship
Rockingham Preview - WIN TICKETS!
By MJP Media | 17 August 2016
Rockingham starts the annual Northamptonshire double header for the BTCC on August 27th and 28th as the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship makes the first of two visits to the county.
Current championship leader Sam Tordoff
The Rockingham circuit is unlike any other on the BTCC calendar as it is the only venue that has a banked track. This, in addition to its long straights, fast corners and hairpin bends, makes for extremely exciting motor racing. Spectator facilities are excellent and include grandstands which afford views of almost the entire circuit.
With only three meetings remaining on the 2016 BTCC calendar, Rockingham is once again likely to be a pivotal event for the championship protagonists. Having regained the lead in the Drivers' Championship at Knockhill, Team JCT600 with GardX driver Sam Tordoff is once again at the top of the standings on 231 points with Halfords Yuasa Racing's Matt Neal now 2nd with 222. Tordoff's team-mate Rob Collard is only a few points behind in 3rd place on 199 while Neal's team-mate and defending champion Gordon Shedden currently lies 4th with 191.
Mat Jackson has won more races in 2016 than any other driver
Rarely has the championship been so close at this stage in the season with many drivers still within touching distance of the top four. Motorbase Performance's Mat Jackson is only 3 points behind Gordon Shedden in 5th place on 188 points with Silverline Subaru BMR Racing's Colin Turkington and Jason Plato 6th and 7th on 183 and 178 points respectively. Andrew Jordan, Jack Goff and Tom Ingram complete the top ten and, with a maximum 67 points available from each of the final three meetings, are well placed to mount a championship challenge should the leaders falter.
Consistency has clearly been the key to the 2016 championship. With four victories under his belt so far, Mat Jackson has won more races than any other driver this season however mixed results have put him 4th in the standings. Current championship leader Sam Tordoff on the other hand has won only one race this year however six 2nd place finishes plus points from all but 2 races have put him at the top of the standings. Currently 2nd in the standings, Matt Neal is the only driver to have scored points in all 21 races so far this year.
Matt Neal has scored points in every race this year
In addition to rounds 22, 23 and 24 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship there will be action from the Renault UK Clio Cup, Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup, Simpson Race Products Ginetta Junior Championship and MSA Formula Championship - a full weekend of exciting motor sport indeed! For tickets to this fantastic event, visit the Rockingham web site or call the circuit on 01536 500 500. With free admission to accompanied children aged 15 and under, all tickets include access to the vast grandstands as well as the central BTCC paddock and, on Sunday, the specially organised autograph session with the touring car drivers in the pit lane.
