By MJP Media | 8 September 2016
The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship heads to Silverstone on September 17th and 18th for the penultimate meeting of the year with Sam Tordoff just 5 points ahead of Matt Neal.
Sam Tordoff currently leads the Drivers' Championship by 5 points
The Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship arrives at the iconic Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire on September 17th and 18th for the penultimate meeting of the 2016 season with Team JCT600 with GardX's Sam Tordoff leading the Drivers' Championship on 258 points - just 5 points ahead of former champion Matt Neal on 253. Neal last lifted the trophy in 2011 and is well placed to challenge Tordoff for championship honours this year, however with more podium finishes this season than Neal, Tordoff has his best chance yet of taking his first Drivers' Championship title.
Behind the two front-runners, the championship battle is extremely close with reigning champion Gordon Shedden in 3rd place on 238 points. With Matt Neal in 2nd place, the Halfords Yuasa Racing team has a great opportunity to mount an effective challenge WSR for the Manufacturers / Constructors Championship in which they currently trail by 31 points. Motorbase Performance's Mat Jackson has won more races this year than any other BTCC driver and is currently 4th in the standings on 230 points - just 8 points behind Shedden - however Rob Collard is just 3 points behind in 5th on 227.

With a maximum of 134 points available from the final two meetings of the year, 13 drivers are mathematically capable of winning the 2016 BTCC Drivers' Championship. Colin Turkington is currently 6th on 210 points with Andrew Jordan 7th on 201 and Jason Plato 8th on 199. Adam Morgan and Josh Cook complete the top ten with Tom Ingram, Ashley Sutton and Josh Cook completing the 'championship 13'. With 12 different race winners so far this season it is impossible to predict who will gain the upper hand at Silverstone. One thing is certain: we are set for some fantastic BTCC action at the home of British Motorsport.
In addition to rounds 25, 26 and 27 of the 2016 Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship which headline the event, there will be full support programme including the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup, Simpson Race Products Ginetta Junior Championship, Porsche Carrera Cup GB, Renault UK Clio Cup and MSA Formula Championship - a full programme of motorsport indeed!
