SThruxton - Qualifying - 19/09/20
By MJP Media | 19 September 2020
Halfords Yuasa Racing's Dan Cammish was the star of the day as he topped both free practice sessions at Thruxton and breaking the qualifying lap record to claim pole position for Race 1 at the Hampshire circuit.
Dan Cammish dominated qualifying at Thruxton
Honda has often been the dominant force around the UK's fastest track and on this occasion, Cammish duly delivered at the marque's home circuit, as he followed up his practice performances with a last gasp 1:15.201s lap time in the all-important qualifying session. Early on he had pushed too hard, aborting his first attempt - subsequently piling on yet more pressure ahead of his final fling around the 2.36-mile circuit.
Toyota Gazoo Racing UK with Ginsters' Tom Ingram thought he had taken the opportunity presented to him as he set the fastest overall first and second sectors, before a wild moment in the closing stages of his fast lap decided his fate. Tom ran wide on the exit of Church - the fastest and scariest corner in the country. Incredibly, Ingram kept his foot on the accelerator to top the timesheets as he crossed the line, but Cammish would eventually pip him for pole.

Matt Neal confirmed the power of of the Honda Civic Type R as the three-time BTCC champion was third, whilst Adam Morgan left it late for fourth in the Mercedes - both drivers having been towards the sharp end throughout the day. Jake Hill's Honda Civic was fifth, whilst Rory Butcher kept his championship challenge on-track with a top-six result in the Motorbase Performance Ford Focus
The BTC Racing triple Honda Civic squad took seventh, ninth and tenth places with Tom Chilton, Michael Crees and Josh Cook respectively making it six Hondas in the top ten. Colin Turkington, had to settle for eighth in this particular session whilst his title rival Ash Sutton in the Laser Tools Infiniti was 11th. Race 1 tomorrow could prove to be pivotal in the championship race!
